This half term, we will be reading the novel “Runaway Robot” by Frank Cottrell-Bryce. Using this book as a basis, we will focus on the genres of Newspaper writing and persuasive writing. We will explore the formal language used in newspaper articles and the way that they are laid out. The children will then plan, write, edit and present their own newspaper article based on events in the book. After this the children will learn about persuasive writing and how to use modal verbs for impact. In their writing, we will be teaching them how to articulate arguments and opinions, as well as how to give well-structured descriptions and explanations. Our grammar focus will be on formal language, how to write using Standard English and the use of relative pronouns.

This half term we will be concentrating on a number of different Mathematical skills. We will start the half term by reviewing our previous learning of the four operations and continue to develop our understanding of word problems in order to improve our understanding of and explanations for Mathematical reasoning. We will also be learning about common multiples, highest common multiples, common factors, lowest common factors and prime numbers. Later in the half term, we will be comparing fractions with different denominators by finding a common denominator. We will also learn how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators ready to move onto multiplying and dividing fractions with different denominators.

We will be learning about the purpose of the circulatory system and the functions of the heart, blood vessels and blood. We will also be looking at the effect of diet and harmful substances and how we can care for our bodies. We will be designing and conducting our own investigations and experiments.

We will be concentrating on word processing skills – particularly using secondary functions on the keyboard via the shift key. We will also be reminding ourselves about online safety and etiquette.

As Members of a Catholic Community…..

As Active Citizens...

As we study the topic, ‘Vocation &Commitment,’ we will explore the lives of those called by God to serve him as a priest. We will also learn about the role of priests in the Old Testament. Following this, in the topic of, ‘Expectation’, we will explore the expectations placed on Mary as the mother of Jesus. We will learn about Advent and how we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus. This half term, we will also study Hinduism and the signs and symbols unique to their religion.

We will continue learning about the Zones of Regulation as we consider how they might be used to identify expected and unexpected behaviours. We will learn how a range of regulation tools might be used to manage emotions and triggers as we deal with small, medium and big problems. This will help us to explore the values of well-being, adaptability and uniqueness. Alongside this we will be considering how we can model the virtues of responsibility, listening and cleanliness in our lives.

As Linguists...

Our music lessons this half term will be spent preparing and auditioning for the Key Stage 2 carol concert. We will be learning how to play the instruments and sing in harmony.

 

Our French lessons will be focused on counting the numbers from 60-100. We will develop our conversational skills using opinions, connectives and negatives. We will extend our knowledge of food and drink.

As Artists...

As Sporting Heroes...

We will be exploring a selection of paintings through art appreciation activities. We will be collecting ideas in sketchbooks and planning for a final piece after researching the life, techniques and artistic intentions of an artist that interests them.

For outdoor PE this half term we have been learning large ball skill and attacking and defending skills linked to invasion games leading to playing basketball matches. During indoor PE we will be finding out about indoor athletics and improving our throwing and jumping skills.
