Spring 1

As Effective Communicators...

As Mathematicians...

As effective communicators we will read The Iron Man this half term. Asking children to share their ideas and make predictions. we will write words and phrases to describe the shadowy figure. Extending meaning of the words and simple phrases with the addition of adjectives e.g. dark, shadowy figure; silent sentinel; imposing figure silently watching. We will use descriptive phrases and make inferences and predictions based on the text. Children should be able to retrieve relevant information from a text and deepen their understanding through comparison.

We will use the school calculation policy to cover the statutory areas of: Number and Place Value of three digit numbers, Addition and Subtraction. Pupils will partition three-digit numbers in different ways. We will use known facts and strategies for addition and subtraction within and across 10, and within and across 100, can be used to support additive calculation to 1000. We will use online materials to support our teaching and learning. Such as, Mathletics and Times Table Rockstars. Within topic lessons we will use our Maths skills to gather and record findings in a variety of ways (diagrams, tables, charts and graphs) with increasing accuracy.

As Members of the Digital Age...

As Historians...

We will focus on typing terminology. To understand the correct way to sit at the keyboard. To learn how to use the home, top and bottom row keys. Children understand the names of the fingers. Children understand what is meant by the home, bottom, and top rows. Children have developed the ability to touch type the home, bottom, and top rows.

We will make increasingly careful observations, identifying similarities, differences and changes. Year 3 will research different famous scientists who have made a positive impact in our world.

As Members of a Catholic Community…..

As Active Citizens...

We will learn to make links between beliefs and life, giving reasons for our actions and choices. Year 3 will explore Journeys’ and understand that Christian life is about going on a journey with Christ and sharing his way of life. In this topic, we will be looking at how the Church Year celebrates the important stages of Christ’s life.

We will focus on a new virtue each month and reflect on previous school virtues, such as, listening. Think about how we as Christians can love and serve God throughout the year.

As Scientists...

Topic Vocabulary

As Designers with a Purpose...

To explain that an object will not move unless a push or pull (force) is applied, describing forces in action and whether the force requires direct contact or whether the force can act at a distance (magnetic force). Compare how objects move over surfaces made from different materials. To investigate the effect of air resistance on a falling/moving object

Motion, metal, pivot, push, pull, force, friction, gravity, horizontal, vertical, distance, contact force, non-contact force

We will make a simple cart using a cardboard box, dowelling and different types and sizes of wheels. Explore different materials and ways of affixing the wheels and axles to the chassis, ensuring that the wheels turn freely. Make mini parachutes using a selection of materials such as plastic bags, nylon and paper. Tie small figures or plasticine to the parachute and see what happens when the items are dropped from different heights.

As Musicians...

As Linguists...

We will be learning about keeping a beat and playing in time, using different musical instruments. We will also be learning about significant contributions to modern music.

We will focus on the French language and compare the vocabulary of number and key words 0-20. We will focus on different foods and drinks linked to mealtimes.

As Artists...

As Sporting Heroes...

We will use our sketch books to record observations and to review and revisit ideas.  We will follow the online tutorial to paint the Iron Man. Paint the finished picture using the correct colours. Year 3 will explore embossed pattern and pictures, making jewellery.

As Sporting Heroes we will communicate, collaborate and compete with each other. We will develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise our own success in team sports, involving Basketball and Gymnastics.
