The word ‘Magis’ comes from the Latin meaning “more” or “greater.” Rooted in the Jesuit tradition, it calls us to strive for excellence—not simply by doing more, but by becoming more: more compassionate, more reflective, more curious, and more committed to serving others for the greater glory of God.
At Botwell House Catholic Primary School, our bespokely curated Magis Curriculum reflects this mission. We aim for every pupil to excel and flourish across the curriculum, nurturing academic achievement alongside personal growth, character, and faith. We believe education is about forming the whole child—mind, heart, and spirit—so that each pupil can discover and develop their God-given gifts.
Our unique curriculum is driven by the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, which are woven through every area of learning. These principles inspire our children to think deeply about the world around them and to respond with compassion, dignity, and responsibility. Through rich, contextual learning, pupils explore what it means to live in the 21st century, engaging with themes of social justice, stewardship, community, and humanity.
In Years 1, 3 and 5 the pupils focus on Care of Creation (Autumn), Dignity of Workers (Spring) and Option for the Poor and Vulnerable (Summer). In Years 2, 4 and 6 the pupils focus on Human Dignity (Autumn), Solidarity and Peace (Spring) and Community and Participation (Summer). In EYFS, pupils encounter all of these principles in their learning. Pupils can then study these principles in depth and revisit them throughout their time at Botwell.
By connecting learning to real-life issues and experiences, our pupils are encouraged to become active participants in building a more just and loving world. They learn not only to question and understand, but also to act—to use their knowledge and faith in service of others.
The Magis curriculum is our commitment to building the Kingdom of God here within the Botwell community. It equips our pupils with the knowledge, skills, values, and faith they need to thrive in secondary school and beyond. Above all, it forms young people who are called to re-present Christ in the world: courageous in faith, rooted in compassion, and inspired to become servant leaders who make a positive difference wherever they go.
